 Vocabulary:

 amount: quantity.

 Examples:

 They didn't deliver the right amount of sand.
 Small amounts of land were used for keeping animals.

 increase/ɪnˈkriːs/ to (make something) become larger in amount or size. decrease

 Examples:

 Incidents of armed robbery have increased over the last few years.

 Life expectancy in Europe has increased greatly in the 20th century.

 plenty of: a lot of.

 Examples:

 We've got plenty of time before we need to leave for the airport.

 They've always had plenty of money.

 endorphin/enˈdɔː.fɪn/ a chemical naturally, released in the brain to reduce pain, that in large amounts can make you feel relaxed or full of energy.


 Examples:

 When you laugh, your body makes chemicals called endorphins.

  Endorphins make problems look smaller and make you feel better about your life.

 maintain/meɪnˈteɪn/ to keep a road, machine, building, etc. in good condition.

 Examples:

 A large house costs a lot to maintain.

 The roads in the town have been very poorly maintained.

 decay: /dɪˈkeɪ/ to become gradually damaged, worse, or less; to cause something to do this.

 Examples:

 Sugar makes your teeth decay.

 It's sad to watch a beautiful rose decay in such a short time.

 ashamed/əˈʃeɪmd/  feeling guilty or embarrassed about something you have done or about a quality in your character.

 Examples:

 You should be ashamed of yourselves.

 She ought to be thoroughly ashamed of herself - talking to her mother like that.

 occur/əˈkɜːr/ (especially of accidents and other unexpected events) to happen.

 Examples:

 An accident involving over ten vehicles has occurred in the east-bound lane.

 If any of these symptoms occur while you are taking the medication, consult your doctor immediately.

 preventable/prɪˈven.tə.bəl/ able to be prevented.

 Examples:

 Both causes are preventable with regular maintenance of the pump.

 Many health problems are preventable on condition that we diagnose them as early as possible.


 diagnose/ˈdaɪ.əɡ.nəʊz/ to recognize and name the exact character of a disease or a problem, by examining it.
 Examples:

 She was diagnosed with/as having diabetes.

 It was not easy to diagnose what was wrong with the business.
