Here is an extract from UNESCO’s Newsletter about education in rural areas. Fill in the blanks with appropriate words from the list: (education, world, rural, conditions, distance, drinking, circle, areas)

Today in many parts of the world, growing up in a rural region often means growing up without a decent education. School attendance is generally low and absenteeism is high, mainly among girls. This is not surprising, considering the distance many children have to walk daily, only to find a school in precarious* conditions, without furniture, learning materials, drinking water or toilets, and sometimes even without a teacher. Rural areas are often caught in the vicious circle of having no access to the services and opportunities that might lift them out of poverty.
* precarious= not safe or certain; dangerous; hazardous; risky.

2. One participant took a taxi

3. Another participant apologized
because he was in hospital.

4. The teacher worked on his lesson plans
in order to be ready.

Read the situations and write sentences using the words in brackets:

2. Her peer was embarrassed taking the pen. She had never written before.

3. Aicha arrived late for the first session. The lesson had already begun.

4. The teacher offered her a notebook. She didn’t take it.

Put the verbs between brackets into the correct tense:

Nick: I just have two more courses before I graduate from university.
By this time next year, I will have graduated and I will be looking for a job.
Jamal: Does that scare you? Are you worried about the future?
Nick: Not really. I
will go to a career counsellor and get some advice on how to find a good job.
Jamal: That’s a good idea.
Nick: I am also going to do training in a bank so that when I leave school, I
will complete my university courses, and work in the real business world.
